Harwood Museum of Art Announces 3 Days of Celebrations for the Opening of its 10,700 Square-foot Expansion

TAOS, NM (August, 2010)—The Harwood Museum of Art of the University of New Mexico has announced that the gala opening of its 10,700 square-foot expansion will warrant three days of celebration.

Ten years in the planning and development, the expansion will add much needed gallery space, archival and curatorial facilities, and a 135-seat auditorium.

Starting on Thursday, December 9, The Harwood will host an evening VIP event for its special patrons and supporters who made the expansion possible.

On Friday, December 10, members of The Harwood Alliance will be invited to a special preview to explore the museum’s new Mandelman-Ribak Gallery, the Bob and Caroline Lee Ellis Gallery, and the Arthur Bell Auditorium.

And on Saturday, December 11, the same date as Taos’ yearly Lighting of Ledoux, the public will be welcomed to experience the new Harwood for the first time with a ribbon-cutting, live music, food and performances. A favorite Taos restaurant, Graham’s Grille, is generously contributing its delicious, creative fare to all three celebrations.

In addition, an inaugural exhibition by artists Bea Mandelman and Louis Ribak, for whom the major new gallery is named, will be on display.

“We invite the community to join us in this celebration,” says Museum Director Susan Longhenry. “The Harwood is truly a Taos treasure and this expansion will introduce new ways to experience great art.”

Events celebrating the Harwood Museum of Art’s expansion project are generously sponsored by Graham’s Grille, the Mandelman-Ribak Foundation, the Harwood Museum Alliance, The Healy Foundation and the Peters Family Art Foundation.
