The Harwood Museum of Art strives to provide a variety of free and low-cost programs for families. Parents and siblings of all ages are encouraged to participate in all Children's Art Programs.
The Fern Hogue Mitchell Education Center: the dedicated studio for our art-making programs is housed in a sun-filled space that originally served as the living room of the original Harwood House. The same space also served as the old children's Library. Four years ago the space was restored to its original splendor through the generosity of Orin and Stephanie Smith. The Fern Hogue Mitchell Education Center is fully equipped to handle large classes and all different media. We have kid friendly sinks, and a bathroom with a changing station. The Art Studio also has a corner with toys, books and activities for children of all ages, a welcome area for those with toddlers.
Saturday Arts for Families, Family Play Date, Museum Adventures in Art, Art & Movement, and Art in Museums are programs specifically designed for families. We also offer special themed art projects for Valentines Day and Halloween. We encourage family participation in all of our programs as we believe that creating together is fun, rewarding, a time for collaboration, and an excellent opportunity to make new friends. There is no need to be 'artistic' in order to participate, our teaching philosophy is low-stress, and encourages open dialogue and a sharing of skills.
The Art Exploration Workshops are multi-day programs that allow families - including visitors planning a vacation to Taos - to enroll their children in a fun, safe, high-quality two-hour program.
All of our programs integrate a visit to the Museum, which for many families can be a daunting task. Museums are fun places to explore - there is no need to know about the art to share the experience of looking and talking about objects with your children. There are a few rules, but these rules are in place so that we can protect the art for your children's children to enjoy. We pace our museum visits to each class, each age level, and each individual mood. As a parent participant you will learn new skills for looking at, talking about and engaging your child with art. These methods can be translated to any other museum visit.
Families are always welcome in the Harwood Museum. Admission is free to children under 12. The Museum provides Family Explorer Packs which can be checked out at the Admissions Desk. These activity kits contain museum and family friendly projects for children of all ages to aid in your visit to the Museum Galleries and Special Exhibitions.
The Museum Shop also features great books, games, art supplies and activities for children of all ages. Dont forget to check it out as part of your Museum visit.
Welcome to a life of art with your family - we look forward to growing up with you!
