Programs for Adults. The Harwood presents a variety of programs for adults including Lecture Series, Gallery Talks, Special Art History Programs, concerts with the Taos Chamber Music Group, Docent Programs, Yo
ga Classes, and Studio Art workshops.
Lecture Series - are designed to complement exhibitions, or topics related to the Museum's collection.
Gallery Talks - an informal program, usually held directly in the galleries, providing an opportunity to look closely at works in exhibits. Gallery talks are led by the Harwood Museum's curator, guest curators, and occasionally artists. This is not a formally seated program, museum benches are used for better physical and visual access to the artworks.
Art History Programs - These programs are focused multi-session programs that explore different topics in art history, led by a special guest instructor. Past programs have focused on American Art History, Regional Art Topics, and Marginalized Artists.
Art Classes & Workshops - The Harwood offers studio art classes for adults, ranging from in-depth multi-day programs to more casual drop in workshops.
Tours Offered
General Tour - An introduction to the collection
This one-hour tour focuses on different themes - exploring the variety of artistic expression and how art is the physical manifestation of the human experience. This tour is conducted as an interactive dialogue between the docent and participants.
Focused Tours - The Harwood offers tours on special exhibitions as well as focused tours on specific galleries including the Agnes Martin Gallery, The Taos Society of Artists, The Taos Moderns, Hispanic Religious Art and Decorative Art. We are also able to customize a tour to your group's interests, needs and areas of studies.
Sunday Free Tours - During the summer months the Harwood offers free Sunday Docent Tours of the Museum at 1 pm. There is no need for reservations, and no additional fees for this tour. Museum admission is free to New Mexico Residents on Sundays or $8 for non-residents. This tour focuses on the Museum collection as well as special exhibitions, and is designed for all ages.
To Arrange a Tour - Tours need to be booked two weeks in advance, a tour rate of $6 per person is available when pre-booked. There is no extra fee for a docent.
School Tours - The Harwood offers free tours and free admission to school groups from Taos County. School Tours are requested by a teacher and can be focus on either highlights of the Harwood's collection or on specific areas of study. The Museum educator will develop a tour that fits the class' needs. School Tours can also include a studio art component, which reinforces the concepts and ideas covered in the Museum. Examples of tour themes include landscapes, portraits, realism, abstraction, Hispanic traditional art, prints and their makers, drawing, sculpture, plein air painting, recycled art, the Harwood's permanent collection and special exhibitions.
College/University Tours - The Harwood welcomes college and university students and classes. University of New Mexico classes receive free admission, and are encouraged to visit the Museum at any time.
