Johnnie Winona Ross

Gallery: Curator's Wall

The Harwood Museum of Art is pleased to exhibit a selection of four works printed by Johnnie Winona Ross at Tamarind Institute.   This spotlight exhibition is presented  in honor of Tamarind Institute's 50th Anniversary.

The Tamarind Institute has been an important resource for Winona Ross. Beginning with a residency there in February 2003, he began to work out concepts on paper before moving to linen. “Tamarind was one of those mythical places," according to Winona Ross.  "Here ‘important artists’ do what ‘important artists’ do."

In May of 1999, after a distinguished teaching career, Johnnie Winona Ross resigned his post as chair of the Art Department at The Maine College of Art in Portland and moved to Taos, New Mexico, to devote himself full- time to painting. He now exhibits regularly in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Dallas, and throughout Northern New Mexico.  He has been the recipient of numerous awards and grants, including a Gottlieb Foundation Support Grant.
