Ann Saint John Hawley: Drawings

Gallery: George E. Foster, Jr. Gallery of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs
Ann Saint John Hawley: Drawings opens Friday, January 20th with a reception from 5-7pm. The exhibition features a series of thirteen, mixed-media drawings created over the last decade. Based on figure models, the artist translates her images through sumi ink, watercolor, and pastel. To create these expressive, spontaneous, and powerful drawings, Saint John Hawley uses sumi ink with a brush, or a stick which can result in happy accidents from the running ink. All works are drawings from life, and created to express the spiritual beauty of human beings. Ann Saint John Hawley was born in Panama, Canal Zone. Her academic training includes a B.S. in theatre from Northwestern University, Illinois; and an M.A. in painting from the University of Denver in Colorado. An artist since the 1960s, she has actively worked in drawing, painting, printmaking, and mixed media work. Recent exhibitions include a three person show of etchings at gallery Maravilla, Taos, New Mexico, 2004; A solo exhibition of paintings, Lotus, at New Directions Gallery, Taos, New Mexico, 2004; and a group exhibition of drawings at Michele Cook Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico, 2005. A selection of Ann Saint John Hawley paintings will be exhibited concurrently at the Fenix Gallery at 208-A Ranchitos Road, directly across from the Harwood Museum of Art
